Trams being discussed for Bath and Bristol once again

It’s a subject which often comes up – could Bath and Bristol be home to a tram system once again? And then often soon after nothing happens as other priorities come up and its decided the plans would be too expensive to implement. But there is now a refreshed hope that something could happen with the local Green party suggesting it could become a major part of the next Mayoral election.

New Edinburgh Trams timetable increases journey times

The new Edinburgh Trams timetable which was introduced on Sunday 1st December – which included the addition of extra trams at peak periods – has led to increased journey times with one local campaigner claiming that is now no faster to take the tram than it is the bus along Leith Walk.

In Pictures: Oporto 196 in service on the truncated Beamish Tramway

Tram services at Beamish continue to be running on a truncated tramway with the section from the Entrance to the Town via Pockerley remaining closed. No official word yet on when trams will once again be able to run around the complete circuit but in the meantime, the service is running Entrance-Foulbridge-Town with trolley turning required at each end. Wednesday 11th December saw Oporto 196 in use along with Sunderland 16 as seen in these images from Trevor Hall.

Another busy weekend expected for Manchester and its trams

Manchester Metrolink services are set to be strengthened as well as TfGM providing additional park and ride spaces and a special shuttle bus service as Manchester gears itself up for what is expected to be its busiest weekend of the year. Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th December will see Paul McCartney playing Co-Op Live, the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium and Disney on Ice at the AO Arena, not forgetting the continued Christmas Markets.

Staff at Edinburgh Trams – from Drivers to Ticketing Services Assistants and the team in the office – have helped to collect funds for the Save the Children charity by celebrating the charity’s annual Christmas Jumper Day. They have spent the whole week by wrapping up in the most spectacular knitwear!

Bikes set to be permanently allowed on Metrolink trams off-peak

Passengers are set to be permitted to take their bikes on board trams in Manchester after a trial earlier this year was deemed a success. But although Transport for Greater Manchester are planning to change the conditions of carriage to allow this to happen, its not expected to be implemented for up to a year to give time for the trams to be adapted.

Tram driver simulators evolve thanks to real-world events

The use of virtual reality to boost safety on UK tramways is set to take a major step forward thanks to the evolution of a pioneering accident and incident reporting system. The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB) are now using data which has identified the most common hazards faced by tram drivers on networks across the country to shape enhancements to tram simulator software.
