If you need to get out over the Christmas and New Year period and were wondering what services may be running on tramways then wonder no further! This is your regular one-stop guide to planned services over the festive period; with the usual caveat that operational reasons may mean there are some changes (the originally advertised Tyne and Wear Metro services for example were soon thrown up in the air after the closure of the Gateshead tunnel), so please check with the operator before travelling.

In Pictures: Gateshead 10 and others in Beamish Tram Depot

The tramway at Beamish may be about to close for an extended period of time, but as we reported earlier this month that will have a positive with a number of maintenance jobs taking place. Not only will that be on the infrastructure but the trams themselves will also enjoy some welcome maintenance. This includes the continued major overhaul of Gateshead 10 as well as jobs on other members of the fleet.

Nexus issue update on revised Metro services

Tyne and Wear Metro services have been split into two since 19th December 2024 with nothing able to run in the tunnels under the Gateshead road flyover which has been closed over safety fears. And now with this disruption expected to continue for a prolonged period, Nexus have issued a warning that more disruption could be on the way for services on the Gateshead (south) side of the Tyne.

Seaton Tramway joins Railway 200 celebrations with New Year Whistle event

The Seaton Tramway have announced that they will be participating in the nationwide New Year Whistle Up event on 1st January 2025. This is the starting event of the Railway 200 events which is a year long commemoration of the historic milestone achieved by George Stephenson’s Locomotion no. 1 and the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.

Metro drivers speak of pride as they put new train into service

Two long-serving drivers on the Tyne and Wear Metro have spoken of their pride in playing a key role on a historic day for the network as the first of the new Stadler trains entered service. Jon Doughty and Chris Mongan drove the new train for the first time with passengers on board as it entered service on Wednesday 18th December 2024.

In Pictures: 17 back out on driver training and then swiftly into service

Another tram not seen out on the West Midlands Metro for a while has broken cover out of Wednesbury Depot again with 17 noted on driver training between Edgbaston Village and St Chad’s on Wednesday 18th December 2024. And it then didn’t take long for it to return to passenger service as just 24 hours later it was in service once more!

Latest Crich restoration revealed – and it doesn’t run on rails!

September 2024 will be well remembered at the Crich Tramway Village for marking the culmination of a ten year major restoration on London County Council 1 as it entered service for the first time in preservation. But just a few short days earlier the museum had welcomed a new vehicle, which has now been restored but will not be carrying passengers along the tramway as it is a coffee van!

Choir sing onboard Supertram to bring Christmas cheer

Passengers travelling on the South Yorkshire Supertram network over the weekend of 14th and 15th December were treated to an onboard choir singing Christmas songs – classic and modern – to help bring not only festive cheer to all but also raise money for the Weston Park Cancer Charity.

In Pictures: Split service in Edinburgh

During the afternoon of Saturday 14th December, Edinburgh Trams were forced to operate a split service after a medical emergency between Haymarket and West End. This led to an unusual split service running – from Newhaven to Balfour Street and from Airport to Haymarket Yards (usually we see trams running Newhaven-Picardy Place and Airport-West End but that wasn’t possible on this occasion).
