Bromley Council show support for DLR extension

Bromley Council have given their support towards extending the Docklands Light Railway to the town at a Council meeting following on from the Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s commitment to the line in the Mayor’s 2020 Vision. It is hoped that if funding can be found the line could open by 2022 providing a link to Canary Wharf where the working population is likely to double by 2025.

In Pictures: The Great Fleetwood Tram Move

As reported over the past couple of days a large proportion of the trams of the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust have been moved the short distance to new outside storage ahead of a final move to the new Fleetwood Tram Museum in the future. Railcoach 678, Balloon 726, Twin Trailer Car 683 and Balloon 710 all made the quarter of a mile trip to the new secured property provided by Associated British Ports over two days and we are pleased to now be able to bring you some photos of the trams during the move.

Supertram discounted fares for Tramlines Festival

People attending the Tramlines Festival in Sheffield will be travel to the event on board Stagecoach Supertram at a discounted rate. The Festival takes place between Friday 19 and Saturday 21 July and during this weekend a Dayrider will be available for £4 allowing unlimited travel across Stagecoach’s tram and bus network in the city whilst a special Festival Explorer ticket will also be available at £3 which will allow unlimited travel between Sheffield Railway Station and Shalesmoor. And if any is planning on attending two days of the Festival a Tram 2 day ticket can be purchased for £7 which gives unlimited travel across the network for two days. The Festival takes place at over 70 venues across Sheffield and this is the fifth year it has taken place.

Blackpool trams invade Sunderland!

In a week dominated by road journeys involving preserved trams, the North East Electrical Traction Trust has now completed the process of moving all of its Blackpool trams to the North East Land, Sea & Air Museum at Sunderland. Twin set 674+684 and Centenary car 647 have now arrived on site, joining fellow Blackpool car Balloon 721 and Krefeld 412 to give this museum a rather impressive collection!

More moves leave Blackpool 761 all alone

Following on from the previously reported moves of two of the trams owned by the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust to a new storage site in Fleetwood, two more of the collection were moved by Scott’s Heavy Haulage on Wednesday 3rd July. This time, Trailer 683 and Balloon 710 were selected to make the short journey from the industrial yard where they have been residing, to the Associated British Ports site at Fleetwood Fish Dock.

Heaton Park depot work begins!

After seemingly endless delays and complications, work on the new tram depot for Manchester’s Heaton Park Tramway has finally commenced. After various materials and plant were delivered to the work site, near to the park’s boating lake, work on laying the foundations of the new building began in earnest on Tuesday 2nd July – a milestone day in the history of not just this line, but also British tramway history in general.

Eastbourne days return to the Seaton Tramway

Normally when you attend the Seaton Tramway the scheduled services are mainly covered by the new trams 9, 10 and 11 – the high capacity, disabled friendly vehicles built in the early part of this century – which means for any regular visitors it can become a bit monotonous on the variety of trams. But now the Tramway have announced that on all Fridays and Saturdays from 26 July until 4 September the majority of services will be operated by the older “Eastbourne” trams to give enthusiasts the perfect excuse to make a visit to ride on these trams.

Manchester Metrolink Engineering Works: Sunday 7 July

More engineering works take place in Manchester city centre on Sunday 7 July with no trams running on Metrolink between Central Park and Manchester city centre and Crumpsall and Manchester city centre all day. In addition the line between Altrincham and Timperley is closed until 0830. Replacement bus services will run again on all affected sections. The service pattern for the trams will be as usual on these engineering work days with trams running Bury-Crumpsall, Rochdale-Central Park, Eccles-Droylsden via MediaCityUK and East Didsbury-Piccadilly.

Nottingham Express Transit Engineering Works: Sunday 7 July

Services on Nottingham Express Transit between Hucknall and Bulwell will not start until 1130 on Sunday 7 July to allow for work to be undertaken on the overhead line between these stops. A replacement bus service will operate between Hucknall and Bulwell from the start of service on Sunday 7 July departing Hucknall at normal tram departure times and returning from Bulwell 5 minutes after the arrival of trams from the city. This will serve all stops.

Stagecoach Supertram Engineering Works: 5-7, 12-14 and 19-21 July

As well as the previously announced major 12 week track replacement work between Spring Lane and Park Grange Croft on Stagecoach Supertram there will be further engineering works over three consecutive weekends in July on Ridgeway Road. These works will take place Friday 5-Sunday 7 July, Friday 12-Sunday 14 July and Friday 19-Sunday 21 July with tram services ending from 1930 on each Friday to allow the track replacement to take place. Normal services are scheduled to resume at the start of service each Monday. For the duration of these works the replacement bus from the City Centre to Spring Lane will be extended to Gleadless Townend and trams from Halfway will terminate short at Gleadless Townend.

Double tram causes delays to Rochdale

Services were suspended for around two hours between Oldham Mumps and Rochdale Railway Station on Monday 1 July during the morning peak after a double M5000 had problems at Derker. It was reported that there was a problem with the coupling between the two unidentified M5000s which led to the service being suspended. Trams from East Didsbury terminated at Oldham Mumps from approximately 0700 until 0900 with passengers for stops to Rochdale Railway Station advised to find alternative ways to get there.

Blackpool heritage workshop update

The Blackpool tram and bus workshops at Rigby Road have been a hive of activity in the last few weeks, with several small but exciting projects involving various heritage trams currently in progress. These involve Boat, Brush and Centenary cars, all of which should be back in action before the end of the summer.

Changes for Blackpool lights switch-on

Blackpool Council have announced that the annual ceremony to switch-on the town’s famous illuminations will take on a new format this year, in the form of a pre-paid, ticketed event. It has also been announced that a second concert will be held the following day at the Tower Headland, which could potentially be an operational headache for Blackpool Transport.

Replica Manchester tram for Crich?

The publication of the Tramway Museum Society’s Annual Report & Accounts for the last financial year has revealed a rather unusual donation to the operators of the National Tramway Museum at Crich. The hefty sum of £200,000 has been bequeathed to the TMS – for the sole purpose of constructing a replica of a Manchester tramcar!

Fleetwood trams on the move again

Following recent reports that the trams owned by the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust stored in an industrial yard on the outskirts of Fleetwood would be moving to a new storage site, the task of moving the trams commenced on Tuesday 2nd July. Fresh from returning Southampton 45 back home to Crich the previous morning following its weekend visit to Kimberley, a team from Scott’s Heavy Haulage then headed to the Fylde Coast to begin the latest series of tram moves.

In Pictures: Southampton 45 in Kimberley

Southampton 45 made a trip on a low loader to Kimberley in Nottingham for one day only to help the town celebrate the centenary of the “Ripley Rattlers” tram system. 45 was chosen to go on display as it is of a similar type to the tramcars which did operate on the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Tramway which started operating in Kimberley in 1913.
