Trams return to Fleetwood Transport Festival

The annual Fleetwood Festival of Transport – more commonly known as Tram Sunday – took place on Sunday 21st July and attracted the usual mix of vintage vehicles, stalls and fairground style rides and attractions. However, after playing a limited role in recent years, it was quite rightly the trams which stole the show, with four different members of the heritage fleet taking part in this year’s event.

DVD Review: ‘The Trams of Beamish Museum’

Earlier this year, the working tramway at Beamish Museum celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special event, ‘Our Friends Electric’, which included a tramcar parade and two visiting cars from other museums. This is therefore a fitting time for the release of the first ever official DVD solely devoted to the museum’s tramway.

Book Review: Leeds Trams and Buses by Michael Berry

The latest in a series of pictorial books from Amberley Publishing deals with the transport history of Leeds, featuring a fine selection of interesting images showing trams and motor buses from the Yorkshire city. The cover features a splendid photograph of Leeds 600, now of course preserved by the Tramway Museum Society (although not on public display at present), and this sets the tone nicely for the contents of this book.

More changes for Blackpool Brush car 631

Blackpool Transport chose the annual Fleetwood Festival of Transport on Sunday 21st July to unveil the latest changes to Brush Railcoach 631. This tram first debuted in May following a repaint in green and cream, but to ensure that the car was ready for its advertised launch date some jobs were not completed at this time. This week on British Trams Online

There is no main site update this week on British Trams Online but that doesn’t mean that all the latest news isn’t on these very pages for you to read – normal service will be resumed next week with some more photo galleries on the way as well as all the normal site updates. Although there is no main site update there have been a few minor changes this week and the more observant of you may have already noticed! Firstly since our 10th anniversary we have had just the one banner at the top of the page using trams past and present from Manchester but we have now finally got around to adding some more with Blackpool, London and Sheffield versions now available. Also at the end of each week I will be selecting what I feel is the biggest piece of news in the week to be pinned to the top of the page for a couple of days  for those of you who only visit the site at the weekend so you don’t miss out on the big news (providing there has been some big news in that week!). The honour of the first “sticky” goes to the acquisition of Oldham 43 for eventual restoration at Heaton Park.

Restoration set to start on Carlisle tram

What is believed to the sole surviving tram of a once 30 strong fleet in Carlisle is set to be moved to a new location in the city to allow for a start to be made on a restoration by Workington Transport Heritage Trust who purchased the tram for £50 back in 2005. It is planned that the tram – believed to one of a batch of eight double deckers constructed in 1912 – will be cosmetically restored and put on display somewhere within Carlisle.

In Pictures: Flexity2 014 being towed after breakdown

One of the normal reliable Flexity2 trams in Blackpool broke down on Wednesday 17 July which led to the rare sight of two of these Bombardier built trams coupled together as a rescue of the failed tram was made. 014 was the tram which had failed and 015 was on call to tow it out the way to allow the service on the Blackpool Tramway to be reformed. We are grateful to David Lloyd for providing us some photos of the rescue operation.
