Woman suffers severe injuries after being hit by a tram

A 72 year old woman was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after she was hit by a tram at Cleveleys on Tuesday 20th February shortly before midday. The woman was believed to be crossing the tram tracks at Victoria Square in Cleveleys when she was hit by the tram but the exact circumstances surrounding this happening are currently unclear. A full investigation is ongoing. Trams were suspended north of Little Bispham for over three hours whilst the emergency services dealt with the incident with the woman being taken to Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulance.

Major delays for Metrolink after overhead problems

What is it about Mondays? For the second week in a row there were delays on Manchester Metrolink and this time they can definitely be put into the major category with overhead problems at both Deansgate-Castlefield and Radcliffe leading to services being suspended and altered. The severity of the problems were such that the Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham demanded a meeting as to just what went wrong.

DLR services suspended to Woolwich Arsenal after discovery of unexploded bomb

The discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb close to London City Airport at George V dock saw major disruption to not only flights from the airport but also Docklands Light Railway services. The bomb was discovered at 2200 on Sunday 11th February which saw the DLR suspended between Pontoon Dock and Woolwich Arsenal both that evening and throughout Monday 12th February. Normal services resumed on Tuesday 13th February.

Douglas Prom redevelopment gets planning approval

The redevelopment of Douglas Promenade is set to go-ahead following planning approval given this week. Subject to any late appeals this should mean that work will be able to get underway this September with the project completed in three years. Of course for the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway this will see a double track tramway retained between Derby Castle and just north of Broadway junction and then a new single line provided from there to the Sea Terminal on the seaward side of the road.

Metrolink disruption after two incidents in a day

Monday 12th February saw two incidents cause disruption on Manchester Metrolink. Both a collision on the Ashton-under-Lyne involving a car and a tram and a pedestrian being hit by a tram in the city centre saw tram services disrupted.

Passengers satisfied with Luas

A new survey conducted on behalf of the National Transport Authority has shown that Ireland’s only tram system, Luas, had the most satisfied passengers in the country with 98% of those surveyed saying they were satisfied with the service.

Snaefell Mountain Railway on track for reopening on schedule?

The continuing saga of whether the Snaefell Mountain Railway will be able to resume operation from the end of March has taken another turn with a report in the Railway Herald seeming to confirm that despite claims to the contrary in the local press it will be all systems go after all. No official mention has still to be made of the prohibition notice with Ian Longworth telling the Railway Herald that it will be back to normal with the current primary and secondary braking systems.

Car 6 returns to Volks Electric Railway

Citylink trams withdrawn from service

All of the Citylink Tram-Trains on Stagecoach Supertram have been temporarily withdrawn from service “due to a problem near Shalesmoor” on Friday 16th February. The exact nature of the problem has not been revealed by Stagecoach Supertram bosses but is evidently concerning enough to necessitate the complete withdrawal of all seven vehicles from service with immediate effect.

New London Tramlink timetable to start on Sunday 25th February

It has been confirmed that the new London Tramlink timetable will start operation from Sunday 25th February – the third revised timetable on a UK tramway in under a month. This new timetable is being introduced to “provide a more regular service with even spacing between trams, reducing passenger crowding”.

Two bridges to be replaced in Croydon with contractor appointed

Morgan Sindell have been appointed as contractor to replace two bridges which cross London Tramlink in a joint project. The 120 year old Blackhorse Lane Bridge and the nearby Addiscombe Park Bridge are to be replaced with work due to commence this summer ahead of full reopenings in January 2019. Tramlink services will be affected at times during this period but the majority of work will be completed without disrupting the trams.

In Pictures: Blackpool preparatory works

The past few days may have seen claims that it won’t be possible for trams to run to North Station until 2020 at the earliest because a new Wilkinson’s store won’t be built until then but that doesn’t mean that the preparatory works for the construction of the short extension of the Blackpool Tramway have finished. As part of a general utility works in the area the first stages of work in preparation for the laying of the tramway has been taking place since before Christmas and although there is no evidence that a tramway is coming this is a vital stage for any tramway in the UK.
