Blackpool Tramway to start running again Sunday 19th July

After 112 days of no trams running in Blackpool (except for engineering trips and some familiarisation runs) it has been announced that a reduced timetable will run again from Sunday 19th July. This will just be the core Flexity service for now but is hopefully the sign of an improved service to come for all trams on the Fylde Coast.

In Pictures: Tram track unearthed in Leeds

It’s the type of story which continues to happen all around the UK as various utility works and roadworks see old tram tracks unearthed. Once buried beneath the road surface following the abandonment of first generation tramways, partly for ease and also partly to help strengthen the surface, many towns and cities across the country periodically see them come to public attention again. The latest city is Leeds.

As from Monday 22nd June it has been compulsory when travelling on public transport to wear a mask in Scotland. This has included the Edinburgh Trams network and as part of the campaign to get the message across to intending passengers tram no. 263 has also started to wear masks!

Major concrete pour marks another milestone in Birmingham Westside extension

A significant step in the construction of the second phase of the Birmingham Westside extension on the West Midlands Metro has been reached following the largest continuous concrete pour of the project. More than 230m of concrete was laid along Broad Street (between Lee Longlands and Cineworld) as part of the foundation for the new track to Edgbaston on Wednesday 24th June.

A new home for a Lisbon tram

The chances are that if you think of a Lisbon tram in the UK your mind immediately heads to the Wirral where fully restored Lisbon 730 can be found operating on the Heritage Tramway there (when that is possible, of course). But there are also a number of other Lisbon cars dotted around the UK, one of which has recently been on the move to Lincolnshire – the tram in question is no. 711 which has been stored for a number of years at Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex but will now call the Crowle Peatland Railway in North Lincolnshire its home.

Replacement bus introduced for Supertram engineering works

Manchester Metrolink bucks the trend as light rail journeys fall

Its that time of year again when the Department for Transport release details of journeys taken on light rail across England – and its not good news with a significant fall in the total number of journeys on all systems except for Manchester Metrolink. Across all systems there is a fall of 4.2% which is said to be the biggest decrease in almost 30 years. Whilst it was inevitable that there would be some effect of the Covid-19 pandemic these figures only run up until the end of March 2020, which would only have seen a short period of the restrictions on public transport travel so other reasons have combined to cause this drastic fall across England.
