In Pictures: Edinburgh flooding as services resume

Edinburgh Trams services managed to resume from 0700 on Monday 7th December having suffered a couple of days disruption caused by severe flooding on two sections of the network. The flooding was first reported on Saturday 5th December after two nights of very heavy rain and despite engineers working around the clock it wasn’t possible for services to fully resume for 48 hours.

South Wales tram-train vehicles start to take shape

We don’t mention it that much but in the next few years South Wales will be home to another Metro style service – the first in Wales – with the upgrading of the South Wales Metro service. In order to operate this service – which will built on conventional railway lines to start with but with the option in the future of some street running into Cardiff – a number of new vehicles are currently being built, including some Stadler tram-train vehicles.

Trams in Video: Brussels City Tramways vintage tram operation – May 2014

On 1st May 2014, Brussels tram route 81 celebrated its 100th anniversary and to mark the occasion vintage trams from the Woluwe tram museum operated alongside regular service cars between Place Montgomery and Place Bara. We see both the old and new operating in this video as part of this celebration.

In Pictures: The continued demolition of Wilko’s in Blackpool

Another week and another update on the demolition of the former Wilko’s store in Blackpool, which is still steadfastly clinging on although once again more of the structure has come down over the past seven days. The project timeline shows that the building’s demolition is due to be finished by the end of the year and with the continued progress seen in the below photos it would seem to be on target for that!

You can now register your votes for the British Trams Online Tram of the Year 2020 with the final shortlist now announced in all four categories: Tram (Traditional), Tram (Modern), Tramway and Event of the Year. Some years it is difficult to come up with the shortlists because so much has happened whereas other years it’s a struggle because not much has – and 2020 probably comes into the latter! But despite that we think there is a good varied selection of trams, tramways and events you can vote for.

Stockport 5 returns to service!

It was 2013 that the last passengers enjoyed the opportunity for a ride on open topper Stockport 5 but that all changed on Friday 4th December with the tram relaunched into service on its home tramway at the Heaton Park Tramway. The tram was taken out of service after 2013 to allow an overhaul to take place and following seven years of hard work the work is now complete and the tram is part of the operational fleet once more!

West Midlands Metro CATs out and about for first time

We’ve seen Manchester Metrolink and their Trambassadors and now the West Midlands Metro have unveiled their very own team to help passengers to comply with the current restrictions – the Covid Advice Team (CAT). They have recently started patrols across the system to give advice on how journeys can be planned to avoid situations where social distancing may be difficult and they will also carry spare face coverings to give to passengers who have forgotten their own.
