Trams in Video: Edinburgh Trams – April 2014

In this latest edition of “Trams in Video” we are off to Edinburgh for some pre-opening footage of driver training during April 2014 – just over a month before public services would commence. We see members of the CAF built tram fleet running at various locations on the system as plans for its opening were being ramped up.

In Pictures: Wilko’s demolished!

It was the blocker for the completion of the extension of the Blackpool Tramway up Talbot Road to Blackpool North Railway Station but it isn’t anymore as the demolition of the old Wilko’s store has now been demolished. That’s right the building which has been in place since 1978 is no more as the last remaining section has now been raised to the ground – although don’t expect trams to be running up Talbot Road for a while yet as there still remains quite a bit of work to be completed before that comes to fruition.

Overhead woes for Metrolink

A major fault with the overhead at Cornbrook on Saturday 12th December saw major disruption for Manchester Metrolink with the repairs taking the best part of the day to complete leading to major disruption for all Metrolink lines except for that between Bury and Piccadilly. An investigation is underway to see what the cause of the problem was with this initially unclear.

Utility diversions underway on Birmingham Eastside extension

Work on diverting utilities on the route of the West Midlands Metro Birmingham Eastside Extension to Digbeth via the HS2 station at Curzon Street is now underway with a water main on New Bartholomew Street being upgraded and future-proofed. To mark the occasion various local dignitaries, including Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street, visited the scene to see the works taking place.

Last remaining Nexus Travelshops to remain closed

Nexus have announced that their six remaining Travelshops at bus and Metro stations will not be reopening, having initially closed at the start of the pandemic overnight on 23rd March. It is said that they are no longer needed as all the services they provided are available online, at ticket machines or through the assistance of staff at bus and Metro stations.

New track to be laid at Colyford in January

The winter period on the Seaton Tramway may not be seeing trams running (after the Christmas and New Year operating period anyway) but that doesn’t mean its not going to be a hive of activity in this small corner of Devon. As part of their ongoing maintenance programme the track across the A3052 in Colyford will be replaced leading to the road itself being closed to all traffic for 9 days.

Petition launched against Port of Leith tramstop

A group of local residents in Leith have banded together calling on the City of Edinburgh Council to rethink their plans for the stop at Port of Leith claiming that it will cause 30 trees to be cut down from an area which is lacking in green areas. They have launched a petition which already has over 130 signatures and have now taken their campaign to local media in Edinburgh reiterating their calls for a rethink.

Smartphone ticketing arrives on the Tyne and Wear Metro

Passengers on the Tyne and Wear Metro will be able to use their Smartphones to travel on the system after a unique partnership between Google Play and Nexus. The new technology has been enabled on all Android smartphones so that people can buy their tickets digitally from the Pop card app and then use that to travel on the network while it will also be able to open ticket barriers.
