Plans for Blackpool Brush 290 to go on display again cancelled

For a few days earlier this month it appeared that the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust’s Blackpool Brush Car 290 (627) could end up back on display on the Prom – this time in a special livery to show solidarity with Ukraine. However, in the end these plans ended up not coming to fruition and so the tram remains stored at Rigby Road Depot.

Online Presentation: Isle of Man tramways and railways

The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum have been running a series of online presentations mainly featuring the trolley lines of the State of Pennsylvania under the title “Trolleyology”. In January they wet further afield though with the railways and tramways of the Isle of Man the feature of a presentation from Ian Longworth, the Director of Transport Services on the Isle of Man. In Pictures: Standard 143 starts testing on the Prom

The Fylde Transport Trust’s Blackpool Standard 143 has finally broken cover from the confines of Rigby Road Depot with testing and mileage accumulation commencing on Wednesday 9th March. This was the first time that the tram had run under its own power on the Prom since its ill-fated launch night on 23rd September 2019.

In Pictures: Broken down bus causes Supertram delays

Crich get ready for the another season

It seems to have come round quickly again but this Saturday, 12th March, will see the Crich Tramway Village reopening for another season. After a couple of seasons where there has been limited opening because of the pandemic 2022 will, hopefully, be a bit more normal with the return of a couple of much missed trams into the fleet as well as some popular special events.

In Pictures: Holes filled in Blackpool!

Over the past few weeks we have seen a few holes appear in the previously laid concrete on the extension of the Blackpool Tramway and now we can report that they have all been filled in! The small squares had been removed to allow work to take place on signalling and points but with this now seemingly completed they have once again be filled so that there is a smooth complete surface once more.

New Metro automatic sliding step revealed

A new automatic sliding step which will be fitted to the new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro has been unveiled as construction of the first trains continues in Switzerland. The step will transform accessibility on the network by eliminating the gap between the train and platform edge at every door on the trains.

Increased service frequency on West Midlands Metro

The gradual increase of services on the West Midlands Metro has continued with trams now running up to every 10 minutes for the bulk of the day. This now means that six trams an hour will be running between Library and Wolverhampton St George’s, which whilst still not at full service level is a step in the right direction.

Out and About: Balloon 700 on Heritage Tours in Blackpool again

During the first month of 2022, Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours regular weekend Coastal and Promenade Tours were mainly in the wheels of B-fleet Balloon 700. Now in wartime green and cream again the tram seems to have become a member of the heritage fleet again with its stunning paint job continuing to turn heads when out on the Prom.

Metrolink patronage back up to almost two thirds of pre-pandemic levels

Passenger numbers on Manchester Metrolink are continuing to rise again after the relaxation of restrictions to travel earlier this year. Whilst passenger numbers had fallen down to 41% of pre-pandemic levels in December, by the end of January it was back up to 64% with further increase seen since.

Nexus victorious at Rail Business Awards

Nexus and the Tyne & Wear Metro have returned from the Rail Business Awards in London triumphant having been won the Education and Training Excellence Award as well as being highly commended in other categories. The award was made in recognition for the boost they gave driver recruitment and customer service training by opening the new South Shields Learning Centre.
