Around the World in Trams: Mattapan Line 3234

Its time to move on again with “Around the World in Trams”  and we are back to the USA for photos taken on the Mattapan Line which is operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

The Mattapan Line runs for 2.6 miles on an old railway alignment and forms part of the Red Line rapid transit line, although to go any further you have to change at Ashmont. It first opened on 26th August 1929 and uses a fleet of PCCs from the 1940s.

The below photos featured views of 3234 which was built by Pullman-Standard Co in 1945. Originally operated by the Boston Elevated Railway Company before passing over to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority control in 1947, and remains in the same ownership today. It was withdrawn in 2012 and after a major overhaul returned to service in 2021.

Photo number one shows the rear of 3234 before departure from Mattapan.

We’re then on-board 3234 showing the interior of these 80 year old PCCs.
