The Isle of Man government Treasury have been asked to present a request for funds for re-extending the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway at July’s sitting of Tynwald following a discussion of the business case earlier this month. This will be the latest (and probably final) hurdle for the plan with members of Tynwald being asked to vote on whether to approve releasing funds for the work.
As was revealed at the start of June 2026, it is estimated that the project would need £3,036,170 in total to be released. This figure is not without controversy with many on the Isle of Man being vocal about what they consider to be a grossly inflated figure (there is a contingency built in of around £1 million).
During the discussions at Tynwald’s June sitting there were differing views given as to whether the project should go-ahead or not. This is hardly surprising with some questioning not only the large contingency but also whether it is the best use of limited funds.
An amendment was brought forward during the debate which called on the Treasury to bring the funding request to Tynwald in July. This was passed and so it is now on the Treasury to work on this over the next few weeks.
Then at July’s sitting of Tynwald it will be on members to decide and vote on whether to commit to the funding of the extension.
