West Midlands Metro service cut in two

There has been major disruption on the West Midlands Metro for over a day with a tram having been left at Dartmouth Street awaiting “specialist recovery”. West Midlands Metro’s website and social media accounts described it as a broken-down tram.

The disruption was first announced shortly after 2000 on Wednesday 27th May 2026 and despite initial hopes that the tram would be able to be returned to depot under its own power that hadn’t been possible.

The tram which failed was Urbos100 43 which seems to have suffered a fault with the gearbox/motor. An attempt was made to tow it back to depot with Urbos3 18 but this wasn’t possible.

It was confirmed on Thursday 28th May that it would need specialist recovery and that it is hoped this will take place overnight, until then however disruption remains in place.

During the disruption trams have been running:

  • Wolverhampton Station/St Georges to Black Lake
  • West Bromwich Central to Millennium Point/Edgbaston Village

No services ran between Black Lake and West Bromwich Central.

Ticket acceptance was put in place on National Express service 79 as well as West Midlands Railway services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
