There will be no service on the Tyne and Wear Metro between Tuesday 26th and Thursday 28th May to allow for emergency overhead line repair works to take place at Benton. The overhead lines need immediate repair work after a dewirement incident earlier in 2026.
Since the initial dewirement took place there has been an emergency timetable in place between South Gosforth and Benton and this work will allow that to be removed and the normal timetable to start operation again. This will see early morning and late night trains returning to service.
During the work trains from South Shields will run at the normal frequency as far as Regent Street from where they will reverse. Services from St James will run as far as Shiremoor before they return to St James again.
There will also be a replacement bus service running to all closed stations.
Stewart Clarke, Nexus Infrastructure Director, said: “The Metro overhead lines at Benton need to undergo emergency repair work. The scope and scale of the project means that we require three full days to get it done. This will allow engineers to get extended access to the overhead lines safely.
“This work needs to happen as soon as possible and I apologise in advance that it’s taking place at short notice. Customers are advised to plan ahead. A frequent replacement bus service will be provided during the works.”
