UKTram explore innovation in switch and crossing S&C systems

Representatives from UKTram have recently visited Voestalpine Turnout Technology UK Ltd in Harworth where they have gained insight into the latest developments in switch and crossing (S&C) technology and quality assurance processes.

Although the demonstration provided was designed for Network Rail infrastructure, it provided beneficial insight into the commitment to quality and assurance applied throughout the process of assembling S&C units.

The session included a presentation from Voestalpine Turnout Technology UK Ltd with both UKTram and LRSSB also outlining their roles within the light rail sector. There was also a product viewing and quality assurance demonstration, including the use of digital mapping to assess and analyse assembled units.

UKTram Lead Engineer Phill Terry and Stakeholder and Innovation Manager Tim Bilby attended the site visit along with the LRSSB’s Craig O’Brien.

Phill Terry said after the visit: “A comprehensive and useful discussion was held between the two parties. The visit also highlighted the potential value for UKTram members, particularly within the Light Rail Engineering Group, with the possibility of a future group visit to the Harworth site being explored.”
