In Pictures: Work finally underway at Birmingham Snow Hill

Its been over ten years since the last tram served it and in the intervening decade it has just stood there as a reminder of where the then Midland Metro used to terminate, but finally work is now underway on dismantling Birmingham Snow Hill.

The original Birmingham terminus of the line from Wolverhampton St George’s was in use between 31st May 1999 and 24th October 2015 but with the network being extended further into the city centre (on to Bull Street, Grand Central, Library and eventually Edgbaston Village) it was deemed surplus to requirements with the line bypassing it on its way to St Chad’s and Bull Street.

The terminus (which featured an island platform) was within the confines of Birmingham Snow Hill Railway Station and a long-held ambition has been that where its located would see a conversion to railway line again to give an additional track through the station.

It now appears that this may be in the pipeline with work noted as having got underway to remove the old tram platform. Its going to a long-haul and whilst they are dismantling the stop there will still need to be more work before trains can hope to use the fourth platform face at the station.

A view of where the old platform was and now being demolished. The old staircase and escalators which led from street level to the stop are clearly seen here as still being in situ.

Looking across from the other side of the station.

On the right here we see the new(er) St Chad’s stop and then in the centre is the former Metro trackbed with the single line track removed. (All Photographs by Andy Walters, 23rd February 2026)
