In Pictures: Wolverhampton St George’s work completed

The engineering work which was taking place at Wolverhampton St George’s has been completed, ahead of the previously released schedule. Work had been taking place on the signalling and pointwork here as part of the plan for a permanent return of services to the original terminus in Wolverhampton.

West Midlands Metro services had last run to St George’s on Friday 6th February 2026 after which the stop was closed once again to allow these works to take place. At the time of the announcement no end date was given for when the works should be completed but posters stuck up around the worksite said it should be finished by 2nd March 2026.

Although Wolverhampton St George’s has been temporarily reopened on a few occasions over the past few months, there remained some work to be completed to allow a permanent return to the timetable. Its hoped this latest work will bring to an end the stop-start nature of St George’s being included on the timetable, and will also help to solve some of the issues seen with the signalling between the two lines in Wolverhampton.

No return date for trams to Wolverhampton St George’s has yet to be announced.

Work now completed at Wolverhampton St George’s. The exact location where they have installed the new pointwork is clear to see by the fresh tarmac.

According to WMM journey planner, trams are serving St George’s today.

Well, apparently Saint Georges was meant to be in use this week, but apparently they still haven’t done the testing on the new signalling point

  2. Richard Maund says:

Clearly service did not resume this week – despite what WMM’s online journey planner continues to show and the departure screen at St George’s this morning (Thursday 5th) showing the next two timed departures (!!) – but with a footnote: “Wolverhampton S Georges is not in use”….. The track was rusty and the orange army was digging up part of the pointwork leading to/from the platform track.
