Tests start on Saltburn Cliff Tramway

Trams have started to run again on the Saltburn Cliff Tramway, although for now this is just testing with no date announced for the public reopening of the funicular which connects the town to the Pier and Promenade.

The line suffered a fire back on 15th January with significant damage caused to the electrical plant room. This happened during the off-season and it was not operating at the time with it part of the usual winter maintenance programme.

Since then the electrical plant room has had a full electrical rewire with all glazing and joinery also completed. Work on installing a new control system still needs to be finished and services will not resume until this has been successfully completed.

However, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have said that tests can start before the installation of the system and early August saw these get underway.

Further details will be announced in due course when the line is ready to reopen again.
