Manchester Metrolink Then & Now: Piccadilly Station

Heading across to the other side of Manchester City Centre for this edition of “Then & Now”.

Last time out we saw one major piece of engineering needed for what would become phase one of Manchester Metrolink and now we feature another: Piccadilly Station undercroft. Now we think nothing of the fact that trams go under the station but back then it was something new.

Its 1990 for the Then image again and we are looking across London Road towards where trams will cross the road and enter Piccadilly Station terminus. Construction work for track installation is underway on the right.

The now brings us up-to-date and shows a tram emerging from the undercroft and about to cross London Street. We can now see the two portal entrances to each platform with track now in the foreground running alongside London Road. Also of note is major work on Piccadilly Station itself which is above the undercroft and more development has taken place on the right. (Both Photographs by Keith Chadbourne)
