Edinburgh Trams staff to be balloted on strike action

Unite the Union have called a ballot for strike action at Edinburgh Trams over late running trams which are causing staff to miss their comfort breaks. The result is expected to lead to strike action as a previous consultative ballot saw 99% indicate they are prepared to go on strike over the issue.

The problem stems from the timetable in operation on the system and a new timetable which has added four minutes to the running time. Delays caused by the signalling system means that it is often not possible for on-board staff to take comfort breaks before they are due to depart the termini. In some cases late running by up to 30 minutes means trams are turned short, completely removing the possibility for the crew to go to the toilet.

The union calls this an unacceptable situation and states that it is causing health issues including stress and infections

Lyn Turner, Unite Industrial officer, said: “Edinburgh’s tram workers are emphatically saying give us our breaks. The sustained pressure being put on our members to complete the airport to Newhaven round trip is resulting in an alarming rise in incidents at work including stress and infections.

“The situation has arisen due to delays in the new signalling system and changes in the new timetable which were not properly tested before going into passenger service. Action needs to happen quickly or strike action will be inevitable.”

Unite represent drivers, ticket service assistants, controllers and vehicle maintenance workers.

A spokesman from Edinburgh Trams responded: “We are surprised the union is taking this course of action as it has been closely involved in our talks with the Trams to Newhaven project team on the efficiency of traffic signals that sometimes cause delays. However, we remain committed to ongoing discussions between all parties, with the aim of addressing their concerns while improving services for customers.”
