Another busy day for Metrolink

Manchester Metrolink is celebrating another day of moving the crowds with 26th May being confirmed as the fifth busiest Sunday on record. It was part of a busy day for public transport across Greater Manchester with the Greater Manchester Run taking place in the morning and the Manchester City Champions Parade in the evening.

In total 126,300 trips were made by tram throughout the day – twice as busy as a normal Sunday. Ahead of the day TfGM had urged people to travel smart with the two big events taking place with use of public transport and park and ride sites advised. The new enhanced, state of the art control room was at the heart of monitoring for the day to help make sure people could carry on moving around the city.

TfGM staff worked alongside Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council, Manchester City FC, Metrolink, bus operators and rail colleagues. With all working together in one control room it ensured there was a shared awareness of the situation as events developed. This allowed for a much more cohesive and joined-up approach to incident management.

Over the course of the day the control room dealt with over 50 transport related incidents and around 500 traffic signal timing changes were made to keep Manchester moving smoothly and safely.
