Metro platforms to be readied for new trains

A new £2 million project is now underway to get platforms on the Tyne and Wear Metro network ready for the fleet of new trains which are due to be in service in 2023. With the new trains having a sliding step which will ensure that the gap between train and platform is almost non-existent it will be necessary to alter tracks at 40 locations and the work for this has already started.

West Midlands Metro advertise for new engineer roles

They are looking for enthusiastic, talented people with the specialist skills needed to maintain infrastructure and rolling stock both now and in the future.

Support from public for further Edinburgh Trams extension

At the start of the year – before you know what arrived – the City of Edinburgh Council launched a Public Consultation into their Draft City Mobility Plan (CMP). This is part of an aim in making Edinburgh a carbon neutral city and included amongst the ambitious plans were potential further Edinburgh Trams extensions. The results of the consultation have now been revealed which included 65% of respondents supporting the expansion of the tramway.

In Pictures: Great Orme Tramway – 2016

It may be a tramway which won’t be running in 2020 but in this pictorial article we go back to 2016 for some views of the trams on the upper section of the Great Orme Tramway. Taken in excellent lighting conditions we see the two upper trams – 6 and 7 – in operation. Dated as February of that year they seem to be being driven by engineers in their brightly coloured overalls which may suggest this was a test and commissioning run ahead of a new season, further suggested by the complete lack of passengers visible. Electric Railway sign to be removed from Derby Castle

Anyone who has been to the Isle of Man will know the distinctive Electric Railway sign on the cliffside above Derby Castle Sheds, indeed it can often be the first sight you get of the MER as you arrive on the island by ferry or plane. But after having been in place for the past 27 years the current sign is to be removed over the winter although the intention remains to source a replacement.

New Covid-19 cleaning process introduced on the West Midlands Metro

A new longer lasting protection against bacteria and viruses has recently been introduced on the West Midlands Metro network as part of their continued response to the Covid-19 pandemic to try and make travelling on board the trams as safe as possible. West Midlands Metro introduced a stringent and enhanced daily cleaning programme as soon as the pandemic hit back in March and this extra process is aimed at making travel even safer and to provide reassurance to anyone who needs to travel on the Metro.

Fylde Transport Trust to tour the illuminations with Brush 621 and Balloon 715

The Fylde Transport Trust have announced that are going to be running two illumination tours on Friday 23rd October (subject to any changes in government restrictions) using Brush 621 and Balloon 715 – two trams which are part of their own collection of trams and are on loan to Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours.

Tramlink derailment inquest postponed due to Coronavirus restrictions

The inquest into the London Tramlink derailment at Sandilands in November 2016 which tragically saw seven people lose their lives has been delayed after extra Coronavirus restrictions were introduced in London. It had been due to get underway on Monday 19th October.

West Midlands Metro 37 returns to Spain

The last built of the original 21 Urbos3 trams for West Midlands Metro has returned to Spain for repairs. 37 – named Ozzy Osbourne – departed Wednesbury Depot on Friday 16th October to make the long trip back to Spain via Plymouth where it would be loaded on the ferry.

Crich to open longer hours as season comes to an end

The last main week of the season at Crich in any normal year is one of the highlights of the year with the popular Starlight event taking place complete with special lighting effects and trams running after dark. Now, 2020 is anything but a normal year but even though it isn’t possible for the usual Starlight event to happen it has been announced that for three days at the end of October they will be opening until 1830.
