In Pictures: Manx Electric Railway goes out in style for 2021 season with the Winter Heritage Transport Festival

There aren’t many tramways in the British Isles who end their season after their most intensive period of action in the year – but then the Manx Electric Railway isn’t like any other system! Sunday 31st October was the last day of the season with the five days leading up to this date being the Winter Manx Heritage Transport Festival including behind the scenes tours, photography tours and an intensive service to round things off.

Strikes to take place on NET this Saturday

It has been confirmed that members of the GMB Union have rejected the latest pay offer from Nottingham Express Transit with a planned strike no due to take place on Saturday 6th November. If this strike goes ahead it will have a major impact on tram services on NET throughout the day.

Is there an unusual future on the horizon for the Wyre Dock trams?

For a group of trams which are stored in a private compound with no public access the trams owned by the Fleetwood Heritage Trust – and currently for sale with the collection being disbanded – seem to get a lot of comment online and that has continued recently with comedian Johnny Vegas recently visiting Wyre Dock to see them in a pre-arranged visit, complete with film crew.

New sidings energised at Gosforth Depot

The first phase of the new Tyne and Wear Depot at Gosforth – the old depot at the same site is being redeveloped as part of the major investment which will include the fleet of new trains being built by Stadler – has been completed with the first sections of new sidings having been completed. This has seen a new stabling area created with the first test trains having now been successfully run in.

In Pictures: Work resumes on Blackpool Talbot Road tramway extension

Its been several weeks since we featured photos from the newest part of the Blackpool Tramway where obvious progress had been made but that all changes here as there is more concrete around the tracks on the old Wilko’s site whilst we can start to play spot the new span wire again along Talbot Road! Another season end at Crich – lets look forward to 2022!

As with several other heritage tramways in the UK, Sunday 31st October saw the end of another operating season at the Crich Tramway Village with one final opening day seeing a three tram service once more. Its been a season unlike any other but despite the various restrictions in place during the year it has seemed to be another successful one at Crich with a respectable 14 different trams being used in passenger service during the year.

In Pictures: West Midlands Metro turn short at St Chads after traffic lights knocked down

Just when you thought there was excellent progress and trams would be returning through Birmingham City Centre very soon and then another problem comes up! This time its nothing to do with track relaying or issues for West Midlands Metro though, as a set of traffic lights was knocked down at Colmore Circus meaning no trams could run any further into Birmingham than St Chads on Sunday 31st October.

Free parking for three months at four Metro Park and Ride sites

There will be free car parking at four park and ride sites on the Tyne and Wear Metro network for three months from Monday 1st November as part of a scheme to attract back more passengers after lockdown. The Nexus owned sites at Four Lane Ends, Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot and Stadium of Light will see free parking introduced.

In Pictures: A busy half-term at Beamish

Its traditionally been the last hurrah before the end of the season – October Half-Term week – and it would appear that 2021 has been no different with many attractions seeing bumper attendances from families wanting to enjoy a day out before the clocks go back and we all start to count down until Christmas! One such attraction was Beamish where with increased visitor numbers (still on timed tickets) two trams were in service instead of the more usual on we’ve seen since trams returned on 4th September.

Blackpool Tramway disruption after road accident

There was further disruption on the Blackpool Tramway on Friday 29th October following a major RTC involving a van and a motorbike at Sandhurst Avenue which required an air ambulance to attend the scene. This led to a split service being operated and also affected heritage tram services as well.
