New LRSSB Chair announced

George Lowder MBE has been named the Chair of the Light Rail Safety and Standard Board (LRSSB). He is currently the Chief Executive of Transport for Edinburgh and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this non-executive position.

Further testing identified for new Metro trains

The much anticipated entry into service of the new trains being built for the Tyne and Wear Metro looks as if it may be further delayed after the latest update from Nexus revealed that further tests have been identified before they can be used in service. The same update also gave information on what they are doing to improve the reliability of the current trains which are soldiering on to operate the service on the network.

TfL start process to get new trams for Croydon

The programme to replace the Bombardier built CR4000 trams which have been running on the London Tramlink network since services began in 2000 has begun with the official tender notice having been posted by Transport for London. With the trams reaching the end of their expected operational life – and their reliability having suffered in recent years – it has been known for sometime that they would need replacing and after much discussion in board meetings this is the confirmation that they do intend to get a new fleet in the coming years.

In Pictures: Metrolink 3047 loses its Christmas decorations

It may have kept them up a bit longer than convention suggests but Manchester Metrolink 3047 has lost its special Christmas livery and seen it replaced by another advert. This time around the tram is advertising Lululemon in a design which adds a bit more colour to the network.

New Tyne and Wear Metro depot completed

The redeveloped Gosforth Depot – home to the trains of the Tyne and Wear Metro since opening in the 1980s and before that a railway depot – has been officially finished by Stadler. Described as a state of the art depot the new facility boosts enviable green credentials and a range of innovative features which will help to ensure maximum availability and reliability  of the fleet for decades to come.

In Pictures: More adverts in Nottingham

After a period following the last refurbishment of the Incentro trams on Nottingham Express Transit which saw fleet livery prevail in almost all cases, it appears that the age of the all over advert is back with 211 becoming the latest tram to receive vinyls. The tram is now advertising Marks Electrical.

Coming around a week after the recommendations had been revealed, the full 95 page report goes into more detail about what the consultants found during their fact finding.

Lisbon 730 heads to the northeast

Luas passenger numbers increased in 2023

Passenger numbers travelling on Ireland’s public transport network in 2023 returned to record numbers after the dip caused by the pandemic according to the latest figures released by the National Transport Authority. This includes the Luas network in Dublin as well as Dublin Bus, Bus Eireann, Iarnroad Eireann, Go Ahead Ireland and TFI Local Link.

In Pictures: Repairs start on 42

A tram which has been absent since September is on the road to return with West Midlands Metro 42 now undergoing repairs. The tram was involved in a collision with an unmarked Police car during testing of the Wolverhampton City Centre extension and has since been stored in the depot yard awaiting for repairs to start.

No guarantees over future of Tramway Terrace in Douglas

Saltburn Cliff Tramway suffers major damage in fire

The historic Saltburn Cliff Tramway has received major damage in a fire, which is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault. The funicular is the oldest operating water balance cliff line in the UK and dates from 1884.

Plans revealed to allow bikes on Metrolink

As part of his last mayoral manifesto, Andy Burnham (Mayor of Greater Manchester) committed to a pilot scheme to allow bikes to be carried on Manchester Metrolink. And now it has been confirmed that transport leaders are to consider proposals for this pilot which would allow invited participants only to take their bikes on board for the trams for a trial period under test conditions.
