The planned second demonstration line of Coventry Very Light Rail has moved a step closer following the submission of a planning application which will include not only the laying of the tracks but also two platforms and stabling/depot facilities.
The planning application – which was submitted on 18th June 2026 – says:
“Erection of temporary stabling/depot structure, two welfare and operations cabins, two temporary passenger platforms and installation of approximately 87 m of very light rail tram track and associated temporary development to facilitate the Coventry Very Light Rail City Centre Demonstrator Line.”
The application also provides a bit more information about what is planned for the demonstration line. It is expected to be operational by October 2027 and will be used for “limited” public demonstrations in few week blocks from 2027 until 2029.
The line would run from Park Road (close to Coventry Railway Station) with an intermediate stop at Mile Lane (which passengers would be allowed to board and alight the VLR vehicle) before it heads to the terminus in Coventry University’s Mile Lane car park. Although passengers would be able to get off at the terminus they would not be able to leave the compound and would have to get back on the tram to return to Park Road.
