Woman taken to hospital after being hit by tram in Edinburgh

A 19-year-old woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a tram on Leith Walk at around 0850 on Sunday 24th May 2026. The collision happened between the McDonald Road and Balfour Street stops close to Shrubhill House student accommodation.

Police Scotland’s enquiries are continuing into what happened for the woman to be hit by the tram. Local reports in the Edinburgh Evening News suggest that she was crossing the road with bags of household waste shortly before the incident.

As a result of the incident no tram services were able to run between St Andrew Square and Newhaven with ticket acceptance put in place on Lothian Bus services between the two stops. Bus services were also subject to diversion because of the road closure.

The full disruption was in place from 0850 until around 1500.
