Douglas Bay Horse Tramway 18 – the only operational double-deck tram in the fleet – has returned to the Promenade for the first time since 2024 after enjoying an extensive overhaul at Strathallan Depot.
Whilst there remain a few jobs to be completed before the tram is fully available for service again, the tram was sufficiently completed in time to undertake a special run to the CAMRA beer festival at the Villa Marina on 8th April 2026. Torrin provided the horse power.
Last time 18 was seen out on the line it was carrying a maroon and cream livery but as part of this latest overhaul the tram is now in a more traditional red and white livery (very similar to that seen on the other double-decker, 14, at the Manx Museum in Douglas). It features large black numbers on the ends and now carries advertising for Bushy’s Fine Ales, Lagers & Spirits.
Work on completing the overhaul will now continue with the tram expected to be back in full service later this year.
Of course, 2026 sees the 150th anniversary of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway. There will be extensive events during the Manx Heritage Transport Festival from 28th July until 2nd August. There will also be a special celebration on 7th August 2026.
