They’ve Run in 2026 – Meet the Trams: Seaton Tramway – 4

“Meet the Trams” continues in Devon as this time out we feature 4.

4 is based on the design of the famous Blackpool Boat car and was in fact the third tram built by Claude Lane and Modern Electric Tramways in this style, each example gradually getting bigger. Built in 1961, the tram was initially used on the line in Eastbourne and like the other trams which operated there it was moved along the English coast to Seaton when the complete operation was moved there.

Obviously it was built for the 2’ gauge in Eastbourne and would need regauging to run in Devon. That wouldn’t be an immediate priority though and it wasn’t to be until 1976 that it was regauged and able to run in Seaton.

It has remained in service ever since, although its small capacity has seen its use more infrequent than many others in the fleet. However, recent years has seen its use increase with special experiences such as the “Seaton Pearl” as well as use in good weather along the three mile line.

We go back to 4th June 2010 for this image of 4 as its seen running along the platform at Colyton with a reserved trip back south. (Photograph by Gareth Prior, 4th June 2010)
