In Pictures: Metrolink works start on High Street

The current set of engineering works on Manchester Metrolink which have seen significant service changes introduced are taking place on the original city crossing with initial work underway on High Street, as we see in these photos from Reece Hughes.

The work got underway from Tuesday 25th March and will continue until Wednesday 23rd April. Its planned that during this period work will take place on both Market Street and High Street/Church Street, with the first works underway on High Street.

During the work no trams will be able to serve either Market Street or Shudehill stops leading to a number of service changes:

  • All trams from Bury and Altrincham will run direct between the two termini, with no service to Piccadilly, running via 2CC. This includes the normal service and the peak service.
  • All Eccles to Ashton-under-Lyne services will travel via MediaCityUK (with extra double trams used to increase capacity)
  • Services from The Trafford Centre will be extended to Etihad Campus

The work compound on High Street is in place to allow the trackworks to get underway.

Outside the Arndale Centre on High Street and where trams usually run vans are currently parked. (Both Photographs by Reece Hughes, 28th March 2025)
