In Pictures: Trackwork continues at Beamish

As we’ve reported on several occasions recently, if you head along to Beamish at the moment you won’t have the opportunity to ride on a tram. The tramway will be closed for the next few months to allow important maintenance work to take place, including on the infrastructure such as the track.

The trackwork has already got underway, starting almost as soon as the last trams ran (which were running at the very start of the year before the end of daily opening over the Christmas/New Year period).

One of several areas to be tackled this winter is the track at the east end of the 1900s Town (that’s the part by the bakery and towards one of the entrance to the new 1950s Town) and this is the part which has already started. Although some of the maintenance which is due to take place will use outside contractors, this part is being completed by in-house staff.

This is how things looked on Saturday 18th January. We are looking away from the 1900s Town here and see the 1950s Town and the rails on the nearside line have now been removed. (Photograph by Gordon Bulmer, 18th January 2025)
