Seaton Tramway Works Car 02 undergoes maintenance

Seaton Tramway’s Works Car, numbered 02 in the fleet, is currently enjoying a well earnt overhaul at the Riverside Depot of the tramway. Over 70 years old and last seeing significant attention in 1992 the tram is vital to the operation of the three mile long line in Devon and with this latest work it should be able to continue its role for many years to come.

The idea behind this latest overhaul is that it will improve its functionality in the continued evolution of maintenance needed on the line.

The work started with the top deck work area being removed to give better access to the tram’s interior. The interior was then cleared, making more space for tools and ensuring an efficient workspace for restoration work. After the structural and functional work is completed, the tram will then enjoy a full repaint.

Construction work started in 1952 at Barnet and the car was originally commissioned by the Air Ministry and was a 2’ gauge vehicle. But after being moved to Eastbourne in 1958, where it was nearly finished, the order was cancelled which then saw the tram used for works duties in Sussex. After a period of store, 1968 saw it rebuilt which saw it both lengthened and receive an overhead gantry. Moving to Seaton it was regauged in 1973 and after a period as just a trailer it was rebuilt again in 1992 into the vehicle we see today.
