Its looking like being another busy weekend for Manchester Metrolink with two big sporting events taking place and the advice from TfGM being to use the tram where possible.
Saturday 12th October will see the Rugby League Super League Grand Final between Wigan Warriors and Hull KR taking place at Old Trafford. A normal Metrolink service is due to operate on this day with spectators heading to the match being advised to either travel on the Altrincham line to Old Trafford (every 6 minutes), the Trafford Park line to Wharfside (every 12 minutes) or the Eccles line to Exchange Quay.
Then on Sunday 13th October it is the Manchester Half Marathon which will see more than 24,000 runners tackling the course which starts at ends by Old Trafford and heads through Chorlton, Sale, Stretford and Hulme.
As well as the usual 15 minute service on the Altrincham line there will be an additional service between Altrincham and Crumpsall combining to give a tram every 7.5 minutes on the line. Runners are advised to head to Old Trafford, Trafford Bar or Imperial War Museum whilst Pomona, Cornbrook, Exchange Quay and Wharfside are set to be difficult to access because of the route.
Fran Wilkinson, Customer and Growth Director at TfGM, said: “It’s shaping up to be a really exciting weekend with two wonderful events that thousands of people will be heading out to enjoy – showcasing what Greater Manchester is all about.
“We want everyone to have a great time and avoid hold-ups and delays wherever possible, which is why I’d encourage anyone travelling in the half marathon area in particular to plan ahead and allow themselves plenty of time for their journey.
“Tram will definitely be the best way to get around and if you’re coming to cheer someone on why not avoid the busy start and finish points and cheer on your runner from one of the lovely places along the route, such as Sale or Chorlton.
“For those who really have to drive our Metrolink park and ride sites are a great option. You can park for free and let a tram take you to your destination, without having to worry about congestion on the roads.”
