A couple of weeks ago we gave you a summer brain teaser as we asked you to name a mystery tram with a Glasgow Corporation Tramways truck. Despite over 600 views of the article its seems no-one could take on the challenge and so now we bring you the answer!
If you remember the teaser photo just included an image of the truck which had Glasgow Corporation Tramways stamped on it along with a small part of the lower part of the tram and its cream livery and signwriting. We asked is the Glasgow wording a red herring and the answer is – of course it is!
The tram is actually New York Metropolitan horse tram no. 3 which has found a home at the Shore Line Trolley Museum in Connecticut. Built by Stephenson in 1893 after withdrawal it ended up as a cottage in New York state where it was found in 1958. To help with its restoration the team at the then Banford Trolley Museum obtained truck parts from Glasgow in 1960 and these were used which is why to this day it still has those words on it!
Thanks to Stephen Cobb for setting us all this challenge!
Excellent. NEVER would have got that!
