The West Midlands Metro are down another tram after 54 was damaged in a collision with a car in Wolverhampton on Monday 27th May 2024.
The collision happened at the Bilston Street island – a notorious area for collisions – and saw 54 receive damage to its front end. The tram was returned to depot where it will be assessed ahead of repairs taking place.
The Ambulance service attended the scene and treated the driver of the car on the scene but they did not require hospital treatment.
West Midlands Metro have confirmed that, as with all collisions, they will undertake an investigation to see if things could be improved to avoid future collisions but as they said in a statement: “In 2021 we worked closely with the local highway authority on upgrades to the busy Bilston Street island, including the installation of additional signage and improvements to road markings, which have since resulted in a significant reduction of incidents reported in the area. However, like all vehicles that operate on public roads, trams are not isolated from the actions of other drivers, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind all road users to pay extra attention in areas where they operate and always follow traffic signage and signals.”
It is expected that another tram which has been out of service for a while – 42 – should be back in action soon having had its own repairs completed recently at the depot.
