The first phase of highway works for the extension of Manchester Metrolink to Trafford Park have been completed – in plenty of time for Christmas so that those visiting the Trafford Centre aren’t badly affected. A temporary road layout has been installed at Peel Circle and no roadworks will take place in the vicinity until 2018.
This pause on works in the busy area around the Trafford Centre doesn’t mean, however, that there will be no work over the next few months. There will still be progress at other key location on the route as well as on land at intu Trafford Centre which is off the road.
Cllr Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “Construction of the Trafford Park line is progressing at quite a pace. However, we have purposely scheduled our work to help visitors and businesses close to intu Trafford Centre at this busy time of year. We’ve opened newly-constructed lanes and removed temporary traffic lights in the immediate area. Anyone travelling to the area to shop, dine, attend an event or ski should be aware that there is a new temporary road layout at Peel Circle to help improve the flow of traffic.”
This extension of Metrolink is due to open in 2020.
As a New Yorker with a very limited knowledge of Manchester, will this extension go anywhere near the Manchester Tramway Society’s Museum?
No, the Bury line will still be the closest although it will go close to where two of the MTMS’ trams resided for a short period when it was the Museum of Museums.
If you take a look at this link – http://www.tfgm.com/journey_planning/Documents/PDFMaps/Met-FUTURE-PS-GEO.pdf it will show you exactly where this new line fits in with the current network.
May I be picky and point out that there is no such thing as the Manchester Tramway Society!
It is correctly titled The Manchester Transport Museum Society.
