Rail Map Online now featuring trams

Rail Map Online – an online resource of past and present railway maps – have recently started to add some tram routes to their website at http://railmaponline.com/. Recent additions have seen tram routes for the West Midlands now available along with the tramway in Rochester but there is so much more available to view.

In Video: Supertram Citylink trams continue testing

As preparations continue for the introduction into service of the Citylink tram-trains on the current Stagecoach Supertram network – due to be in later summer – testing and driver training has been continuing in recent weeks. In mid-June Martin Miller paid a visit to the city with 399 205 in action.

Brake fault causes SMR tram to overrun Bunaglow stop

An investigation has been launched after a tram on the Snaefell Mountain Railway suffered a fault with its normal braking system which led to it overrunning the stop at Bungalow – and across the road – on a downward trip. The fault occurred at approximately 1445 on Friday 4th August with no passengers suffering injuries as a result.

Douglas Bay Horse Tramway enjoys a successful Transport Festival

A few years ago the Manx Heritage Transport Festival seemed to pass the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway by with just a normal service running with normal trams. But now with Isle of Man Transport in charge of the horse trams as well it has been brought into the mix much more and the 2017 event was no different.

Latest RAIB reports into Tramlink derailment released

As the Rail Accident Investigation Branch continue their investigation into the tragic derailment at Sandilands on 9th November 2016 they have released their latest update. This time the update includes some draft recommendations to allow both Tram Operations Limited (operator of Tramlink) and other tram companies in the UK to start to implement them before the final report is released later this year.

The track replacement work on Bilston Road is still going on disrupting Midland Metro services but good progress does still seem to be being made and the chance is also being taken to install the junction between the current line and the extension to Wolverhampton Railway Station. Nurse of the Year names her tram

The latest recipient of Nottingham’s Nurse of the Year, Christina O’Loughlin, has unveiled her name on the side of Citadis 220 in a special ceremony at Wilkinson Street Depot. Student Nurse Christina was the guest of honour at the ceremony on Monday 31st July.

Happy Birthday Docklands Light Railway!

Officially opened by HM The Queen in the summer of 1987 the Docklands Light Railway is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. A much changed network to the original 11 train, 15 stop line the DLR has helped to kick start regeneration in the area as well as providing a vital transport service across London’s Docklands.

Purple route back to normal

After several weeks of disruption the Purple route returned to full tram operation from Wednesday 2nd August. On Mondays to Saturdays only early morning and evening services were operated by tram due to tram shortages with a replacement bus in service at other times. However now these temporary shortages have been solved its back to normal for the trams from Herdings Park.

Starr Gate Depot at Blackpool remains fairly rare territory for members of the heritage fleet, but on 1st August visiting Brush Railcoach 623 headed into the modern building for the first time in its life – indeed the last time 623 was in Blackpool before the start of its current loan period, the depot hadn’t even been built!

Purple Tram Fridays come to Crich

Blackpool Jubilee 762 is certainly a tram that polarises opinion but has proven to be popular with children thanks to its old Nickelodeon Land all over advert with various cartoon characters including Spongebob Squarepants on the ends. Over the past few years it is a tram which has seen limited use on normal service days but all that is about to change with the first ever Purple Tram Fridays announced for Crich Tramway Village in August.

In Pictures: Horse Tram Day at Crich

Monday 31st July was the latest opportunity for visitors to enjoy the delights of a horse drawn tram at Crich with Joseph once again being used to haul Sheffield 15 between Town End and the Depot crossover. The day also saw a normal electric tram service in operation with Chesterfield 7, Glasgow 22 and Oporto 273 also in service. Photos from Hazel Quarmby.

In Pictures: New advert for 261 as Edinburgh launch late night trams for Festival

Edinburgh Trams 261 has received new adverts to publicise the Edinburgh Festival and the special tram service running on Saturday nights throughout August. This service will see trams running every half hour between midnight and 0530 on Saturday night/Sunday morning to help festival goers make the most of a packed programme of events.
