Manchester Metrolink bucks the trend as light rail journeys fall

Its that time of year again when the Department for Transport release details of journeys taken on light rail across England – and its not good news with a significant fall in the total number of journeys on all systems except for Manchester Metrolink. Across all systems there is a fall of 4.2% which is said to be the biggest decrease in almost 30 years. Whilst it was inevitable that there would be some effect of the Covid-19 pandemic these figures only run up until the end of March 2020, which would only have seen a short period of the restrictions on public transport travel so other reasons have combined to cause this drastic fall across England.

Covid-19 service update – operating systems

Its been a while since we had a round-up of the service being operated on operating tramways and light rail systems in the British Isles (by which we mean those which operate primarily as public transport and not heritage systems – more on those soon!) so here we update on the current services running at the time of publication. Whilst most networks are still running a reduced service it is an improved picture on where we were a couple of months ago, for most systems anyway.

In Pictures: Wolverhampton City Centre extension update

A few days ago we took a look at recent progress on the second phase of the Birmingham Westside extension and in this latest article we are at the other end of the West Midlands Metro network with images taken of the Wolverhampton City Centre extension. Whereas at the Birmingham end it is still a hive of activity it is a different case here as much of the infrastructure is already in place but can’t be completed until the redevelopment of the railway station nears its conclusion. Photos again come from Dan Noon.

Crich and Seaton announce plans to re-open

Following the latest relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions in England (Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate rules made by their devolved governments), as from 4th July it will be possible for tourist attractions to reopen – and this includes heritage tramways. However, with restrictions still in place it will be a different experience for visitors with social distancing still being put into practice as an example. Shortly after the government made the announcement it was confirmed that both the Crich Tramway Village and Seaton Tramway would be re-opening in July.

Transport Focus release results for the ever-decreasing Tram Passenger Survey

Over the years the Transport Focus Tram Passenger Survey (TPS) has discovered the opinions of passengers on the Blackpool Tramway, Edinburgh Trams, Manchester Metrolink, Nottingham Express Transit, Stagecoach Supertram and West Midlands Metro to see just how they perceive the service offered. But the 2019/20 survey has seen just Metrolink and Supertram seek the services of Transport Focus to get those all important opinions to help increase passenger levels and improve the service for those long-standing travellers with other systems presumably going their own way with surveys instead. Of those two systems which have continued to use this survey there has been a decrease in the overall satisfaction figure in comparison to the previous year.
