Another busy day for Metrolink

Manchester Metrolink is celebrating another day of moving the crowds with 26th May being confirmed as the fifth busiest Sunday on record. It was part of a busy day for public transport across Greater Manchester with the Greater Manchester Run taking place in the morning and the Manchester City Champions Parade in the evening.

In Pictures: Overhead line problems for West Midlands Metro

Services on the West Midlands Metro were disrupted for several hours on Wednesday 12th June because of an overhead line fault close to Dudley Street. Whilst repairs took place a split service was operated on the line.

In Pictures: First passenger tram runs to North Station

Whether you take it as being 88 years (trams on Talbot Road) or 61 (trams to North Station) there’s no doubt its been a long time (and it seems for a lot of that we’ve been waiting for the thing to be built and open!) but finally on Wednesday 12th June the first passengers enjoyed a ride on the latest UK tram extension to North Station, Blackpool at the start of several days of special launches.

New event for Crich as they go back in time to several periods

The Crich Tramway Village has long been home to a TARDIS (or old fashioned Police Box if you prefer to be more grounded in reality!) so is no stranger to travelling in time but a new event on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June will see several different periods represented. Past Times Living History Weekend brings history alive from the 15th century all the way through to the mid-20th century and is an all new event for 2024.

Stadler reach half way point in construction of new Tyne and Wear Metro trains

Stadler have confirmed that they have now finished construction of half of the planned fleet of new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro. 23 of the 46 trains have been completed in Switzerland with seven so far having been delivered to north east England, and further examples are expected to follow later this year.

In Pictures: More trams running the Supertram revised service

Things may have now returned to normal on the South Yorkshire Supertram system after the conclusion of the city centre trackwork but for a week at the end of May and just into June a special service was operating which saw a fourth colour route added into the mix. Stuart Cooke went out onto the network again on Sunday 2nd June to capture some more images of trams heading to unusual places in different locations.

Welcome to T1, T2 and T3 – the new era for the Blackpool Tramway

Sunday 16th June will mark a new era for the Blackpool Tramway as for the first time in 88 years trams will be running along Talbot Road on the extension to North Station (and the first time since 1963 that trams ran to the station along the former Dickson Road route). As well as that bit history the same date will see route numbers introduced – welcome to T1, T2 and T3!

In Pictures: Emergency exercise in Nottingham

Whilst everyone hopes the worst never happens, there is always the potential for there being a serious incident involving a tram which requires the emergency services to attend. To make sure that if this does happen everyone is prepared for what they can do there are semi regular rehearsals involving the emergency services and one such exercise took place in Nottingham on Friday 31st October.

Supertram to trial extra peak time services

When the South Yorkshire Combined Authority took control of Supertram back in March they promised that they would be reviewing the timetable to make sure it catered for the needs of the travelling public. And now the first step towards this has been announced with a trial of extra peak time services between Monday 10th June and Friday 19th July.

In Pictures: More advert liveries seen in Manchester

No sooner do we report on various adverts being removed on Manchester Metrolink trams then there is a whole host of more added – including some of those very trams we said were now back in fleet livery! 3024, 3061, 3116 and 3118 have all got new vinyls – three of them had only just gone back to fleet colours whereas we also have a first timer.
