Manchester Airport line gets ready for launch

The latest piece of the Manchester Metrolink jigsaw to open – the Manchester Airport line – will welcome its first passengers on Monday 3rd November. In a break from tradition a special first journey will run on this line with a double tram departing Cornbrook at 0500 which all members of the public, including the media, are welcome to board for the trip to the Airport, where it is due to arrive at approximately 0540. The pair will then form the very first public departure from the Airport when they set off for Cornbrook at 0549. This will be a special one-off early morning journey on the Airport line with the earliest tram from Cornbrook the following day being at 0550.

I have been informed that Metrolink commenced services to the Airport on Saturday 1st November providing free rides to the public.

    • John Ison says:

You are correct Ralph. However free rides were only available to local residents living near the Metrolink line who were given special letters allowing them this privilege between 10:00 and 15:00 hrs on Saturday 1st. November.

      • Ken Walker says:

Same thing happened when they opened the line to Droylsden. Strangely enough people on the Rochdale line didn’t get offered this facility, presumably because it was a former railway line and not a completely new one.
