Blackpool Tramway to request government help

It may have been closed since the end of March with all intending passengers told to travel on the Promenade Bus service instead, but following the announcement last week that the DfT would be awarding financial help to lines in Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Tyne and Wear and the West Midlands, officials at Blackpool Transport have confirmed in the local press that they too will be seeking support to help secure the future of the Blackpool Tramway.

Overhead line works on the way for West Midlands Metro

There will be a change to the service on the West Midlands Metro between 2100 on Saturday 9th May and 1000 on Sunday 10th May to allow for overhead line works to take place between Jewellery Quarter and St Chads. Throughout this period trams will only run between Wolverhampton St George’s and Handsworth Booth Street with a replacement bus into Birmingham City Centre.

Tyne & Wear Metro confirm £8.6 million government bailout

When it was reported a couple of weeks ago that the Department for Transport had agreed to support light rail systems in Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Tyne and Wear and the West Midlands exact details of how much this would equate to were sketchy. However, Nexus, the public body who owns and manages the Tyne & Wear Metro, have now confirmed that they have secured an £8.6 million government bailout.

Douglas Prom works to resume

After being suspended at the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, it has now been announced that works on the Douglas Promenade reconstruction – including the relaying of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway – will resume from Monday 4th May with the aim now to complete them by Easter 2021 – some four months earlier than the last plan.

Further stages of 2020 Supertram rail replacement work confirmed

We reported last month on the first phase of the 2020 Stagecoach Supertram rail replacement project which will get underway on Monday 4th May in the Hackenthorpe, Donetsk Way and Birley Golf Course areas and last until 5th June. It has now been confirmed that there will be three further phases of work this year, which is the last of the current three rail replacement project.

Wirral Bus & Tram Show 2020 cancelled

It has been announced that the Wirral Bus & Tram Show – due to take place on Sunday 4th October 2020 – has been cancelled as a result of the continued Coronavirus pandemic. Whilst it may seem a very early cancellation, it takes six months to plan and with the uncertainty of when even basic social distancing may still be required the sensible decision has been made to cancel the event for the first time in its history.
