In Pictures: RTC causes Supertram delays

On Friday 19th June a RTC close to Hillsborough Interchange (not involving a tram) caused disruption for Stagecoach Supertram services with no trams able to travel any further than Hillsborough from the city centre for around an hour. It is not known what caused the accident but a car was seen with damage to its front wing just by Hillsborough tramstop. During the disruption trams from Meadowhall on the Yellow route and from Gleadless Townend (with track replacement works further up the line to Halfway) were terminated at Hillsborough.

In Pictures: Birmingham Westside construction works continue

When the lockdown restrictions were first introduced in England, work on the West Midlands Metro Birmingham Westside extension (phase two to Hagley Road, Edgbaston) was briefly suspended before getting underway again after a couple of weeks with full social distancing advice being put into practice. Tyne and Wear Metro introduce new procedures to make network more COVID secure

We’ve reported many, many times over the past few months about changes introduced in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, ranging from reduced services to social distancing but behind the scenes other changes have also been introduced to try and make our transport networks as safe as they can be. One system which has introduced new cleaning procedures is the Tyne and Wear Metro with an new anti-viral spray being used on trains whilst hand sanitiser points have also been installed at some of the busiest stations.

KenEx tram gets a tunnel boost

Across the UK there are many areas which take a look at the possibility of introducing trams and then after a while and the realisation of the scale of any such project quietly abandon the project but one region which is still actively looking into plans for a new tram network to link Dartford with Grays via a Thames crossing. We last reported on the KenEx Tram plan in 2017 but a new update has just been released by the project team with a boost to the plan in regards to a proposed tunnel under the Thames.

VolkerFitzpatrick appointed to build new Metro depot

The new Tyne and Wear Metro depot at South Gosforth – replacing the current structure – is to be built by VolkerFitzpatrick following their appointment by Stadler to construct the £70 million facility to accommodate the state of the art trains which should enter service from 2023.

Isle of Man Government commit to completing Horse Tramway – in winter 2021/22

It’s a story which still no signs of having a final resolution – we are of course talking about the relaying of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway all the way between Derby Castle and the Sea Terminal. Last time we reported on the latest developments it appeared that the Isle of Man Government were going back on their promise to fully lay tracks, specifically the final section between Broadway and the Sea Terminal, but they have now committed to completing the line – although it won’t be until winter 2021/22 that a full tramway is in place.

What did we learn from Seaton Tramway’s Tramathon?

Over the week of 8th June 2020, the Seaton Tramway had a week of remote events to not only entertain us but also to help raise funds to secure the future of the Tramway, with their main stream of money currently unavailable as a result of their enforced closure. With various different events taking place – culminating in a full 24 hour “Tramathon” which saw trams run on the line throughout the night – there were plenty of snippets of information for both the immediate and longer term futures and in this article we take a look at some of these.

Trams in Video: Isle of Man Horse Trams – July & September 2013

A trip across the Irish Sea to the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway for this latest edition of “Trams in Video”. Filmed in July and September 2013 we see both the horse trams running along Douglas Promenade as well as a peek inside the depot at Strathallan. At the time of this video originally being uploaded the future of the horse tramway was in doubt but fortunately this seems to have passed now (although how much of a line we end up with still seems uncertain) and the depot is also enjoying a major rebuild.
