In Pictures: New Ashton Interchange opens

As expected Sunday 30th August saw the opening of the new interchange at Ashton-under-Lyne. This new multi-million pound facility now provides a seamless interchange between Manchester Metrolink and local bus services with plenty of covered accommodation for passengers as they wait to continue their journeys. More rail replacement work coming for Supertram

Area 4 of the 2020 Supertram Rail Replacement works will get underway from Tuesday 15th September with the work this time being completed around Crystal Peaks necessitating service changes for the Blue route. The Purple route will also return to operation but on a revised timetable with the Yellow route and Tram-Train service unaffected by this work.

In Pictures: Birmingham Westside extension works continue

Work on further extending the West Midlands Metro to Hagley Road in Edgbaston have been continuing over the past few months with just a short break at the start of the lockdown restrictions in March. This extension will see trams continue beyond the temporary terminus at Library travelling via Broad Street and Five Ways to the new terminus at Hagley Road – the line is due to open in 2021. Dan Noon recently took a walk along the line from Library and this pictorial features some of the images showing how things looked at the end of August 2020.

One Ticket now valid on Edinburgh Trams

“One Ticket” can now be used to travel on-board Edinburgh Trams following the addition of the trams to the modes of transport you can use this ticket on. Previously only valid on buses and trains in East Central Scotland, the ticket became valid on Edinburgh Trams as well from Sunday 30th August.

Heritage trams return to the rails in Blackpool

As planned the August Bank Holiday weekend saw the return of Blackpool’s heritage trams to the tracks with three days of special tours taking place using three different trams each day. A combination of “Promenade Tours” and “Coastal Tours” ran with different tram types allocated to these trips. In total six different trams ran over the course of the weekend in service as social distanced passengers could again enjoy a traditional tram ride in Blackpool for the first time since the end of March.

More Engineering works for Luas

There will again be disruption to normal services on Luas over the weekend of 5th and 6th September with the Red line being closed between Blackhorse and Heuston throughout the weekend. As previously, Connolly Station will not be served by either trams or buses during the weekend but all other affected sections will see a replacement bus service.

In Pictures: Seaton Tramway celebrates 50 years

It wasn’t the celebration originally envisaged but Friday 28th August 2020 saw the Seaton Tramway in Devon commemorate 50 years of operation with an intensive tram service operating the length of the line – including the ever elusive no. 4. Although the hoped for 13 trams in service on anniversary day wasn’t able to be achieved nine different passenger trams ran giving plenty of variety for visitors.

Full service resumes on West Midlands Metro

As restrictions continue to be eased and people are persuaded to head back into the office more regularly, the West Midlands Metro have announced that they are now running a full service once more. The reintroduction of the usual timetable was on Tuesday 1st September and will see trams running up to every 6 minutes at peak times during the week for the first time since March.

Southampton Tram Project trams move across the city

Thursday 27th August was an auspicious day for the Southampton Tram Project as their three trams moved across the city to a new home at the Solent Sky Museum – a permanent home for the group which it is hoped will enable work on the restoration of the trams to continue to make smooth progress.

Edinburgh Waverley masterplan looks at improved tram links

Anyone who had ever been to Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station and then looked for onward transport connections will be well aware that the location of the station has meant that it isn’t the easiest task. But a new masterplan is seeking to solve some of these problems as well as creating a “station for the people”. While a lot of the masterplan need not concern us on these pages, there is brief mention of the trams.

Designs confirmed for new Southend Pier Railway trains

The new trains due to be introduced into service on the Southend Pier Railway will be a mixture of heritage and modern after the local Council revealed the confirmed final designs earlier in the summer. Green and cream will return to the fleet – a colour scheme last seen in 1978 – whilst the noses of the trains will be of a modern design.
