Summerlee reopens from 26th April

The latest location with a heritage tramway to announce their reopening plans for 2021 is the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, with confirmation that the museum – including Scotland’s only heritage tramway – will reopen from Monday 26th April.

All change at Crich as Derby 1 and Cardiff 21 get set to say goodbye

2021 looks set to be a year of change at the Crich Tramway Village with restorations start to come to a conclusion while work will start on the major restoration of Blackpool Brush Railcoach 298. With 298 set to be moved back to Crich from Clay Cross later this year it means that there will be some changes to those trams on display – both Derby 1 and Cardiff 21 will be leaving the museum site but not before they have one last day out in the open.

Today “Stop by Stop” returns to Nottingham Express Transit as we embark on a journey out to Toton Lane. Having previously covered the Clifton South line in this series we now head back towards the city centre and will start the review of this line on the first stop after the Nottingham Station viaduct, which for the Toton Lane line is Meadows Way West.

In Pictures: Work continues on the old Wilko’s site

Preparation work on the site once occupied by the Wilko’s store on Talbot Road, Blackpool has been continuing in recent weeks. As we’ve reported many times over the past couple of years this site will become the location of the tram terminus of the Blackpool North Railway Station tramway extension but before that can be constructed the site has to be readied and although it appears that since the last of the Wilko store was demolished very little has happened there has been good progress on making sure that the site is fully ready for construction work to start later this year.

In Pictures: Beamish reopens – transport waits to resume

Monday 12th April not only saw the reopening of the Crich Tramway Village and Seaton Tramway but also Beamish, although for the Living Museum of the North, it is almost a transport free zone for now with just the access bus running and trams not due to resume until 4th September.

In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams 258 loses its adverts as it returns to service

Some of the eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed in one of our recent “Lockdown Walks” that Edinburgh Trams 258 has lost its C R Smith adverts while at the same time also losing the grey section on the cab ends giving it a rather unfinished look. This is the tram was derailed after a collision with a bus and has only recently returned to service after repairs were completed.

A return to school for Balloon 710?

Since the announcement was made earlier this year that the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust had decided to dispose of their tram collection – the bulk of which remains stored in a secure compound at Wyre Dock – there has been much discussion across social media as to what will become of these trams with no obvious answers offered to provide a future for all of them. But now there could be a more secure future for Balloon 710 as it could be off to school!

Trams are back at Crich and Seaton!

You’ll probably have seen the news headlines today as the queues of people outside non-essential shops as they reopened for the first time since January but that isn’t all that has been able to re-open following the latest relaxation of restrictions – heritage tramways can also now start to run! And Monday 12th April saw two heritage lines in England run for the first time this year – the Crich Tramway Village and Seaton Tramway.

Service frequency increased on West Midlands Metro again

Trams in Video: London Trams & Trolleybuses 2012

2012 marked 60 years since the last tram ran in London (until Tramlink came along) and the year saw a couple of special events held – one at the East Anglia Transport Museum and one at Crich. In this video we start off at the East Anglia Transport Museum where there were eight London trolleybuses in service but resident London tram 1858 before heading to Crich with the three London cars in service plus several other from the collection.

Latest Metrolink update to GMCA shows passenger numbers are still well down

The latest meeting of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Transport Committee included an update from the TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, which gives an insight into how the network is continuing to operate during the pandemic. We recently saw that in Nottingham passenger numbers were down at 11% of pre-pandemic levels but for Manchester Metrolink it’s a slightly better picture with the figure said to be between 17% and 19% (although, obviously, this is still very much at a level where financial support is needed).

Promotion of light rail post-pandemic under discussion

UK Tram are leading discussions amongst tram and light rail operators in the UK to plan for the promotion of passengers returning to travel once Coronavirus restrictions start to be lifted later this year. While detailed plans remain difficult because of the continued uncertainties whether the Government’s roadmap will be able to be met planning is said to be well underway.
