In Pictures: Edinburgh Trams moves the 6 Nations crowds

We’ve said it before on these pages (and will no doubt say it again!) but modern tram systems really come into their own when there are large crowds of people to move. With trams holding around 200 passengers a go (or nearly 250 for Edinburgh) they are mass people movers and when there are events at Murrayfield Stadium it is the only way to get the thousands of people to and from the event. Saturday 10th February 2024 saw Scotland’s first home match in this year’s 6 Nations Rugby Championship take place and in this article we see some of the trams in action.

In Pictures: Stagecoach branding being removed on Supertram

It was confirmed last year that when Stagecoach’s contract to operate the South Yorkshire Supertram system comes to an end in March 2024 that it will not be renewed with an “arms length” publicly owned company being set-up to run it instead. Whilst there are likely to be very few, if any, noticeable changes when the change-over takes place one thing which is already happening is the removal of Stagecoach branding on the exterior and interior of the trams.

Timelapse video showcases Metro’s new depot

As work has now finished on the Tyne and Wear Metro depot at Gosforth which has seen the facility upgraded and redeveloped in a £70 million project, Nexus have released a timelapse video on YouTube. This video shows the project from 2020 until January this year and includes the demolition of 100 year old buildings and their replacement with new state of the art facilities.

In Pictures: 32 is the latest tram to return from Dudley

And then there were none. No CAF trams at the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre in Dudley that is. For the first time since October 2022 when 17 became the first of the class to head that way for repairs the facility is devoid of Urbos3s after 32 was transported back to Wednesbury Depot on Thursday 15th February 2024.

Volk’s Electric Railway win at Heritage Railway Association Awards

The historic Volk’s Electric Railway which has been running along Brighton seafront since 1883 has been recognised at the Heritage Railway Association Awards. The railway was named “Railway of the Year” at a glitzy ceremony which appropriately took place in Brighton on 10th February 2024.

In Pictures: Welsh Tram-Trains in their new home

Earlier this month we brought you photos of the delivery of one of the Stadler built Tram-Trains which are set to enter service from later this year on Cardiff Metro services. Consultation to be launched for DLR extension

The Docklands Light Railway could gain a new line under the River Thames to Thamesmead if plans currently being consulted on are approved. The plan would see a branch installed off the Beckton line with new stations at Beckton Riverside as well as Thamesmead with up to 25,000-30,000 new homes being unlocked along the route.

5th to 11th February 2024 marks the annual National Apprenticeship Week and as part of the events connected with this the Transport Skills Academy (TSA) is encouraging people in the West Midlands to consider a career in transport. Blackpool 634 to be launched at East Anglia Transport Museum this Easter!

The much anticipated launch amongst Blackpool tram enthusiasts of Brush Railcoach 634 is set to take place this Easter after the completion of testing and commissioning work on the tram which only arrived at the East Anglia Transport Museum in November 2023. To mark the occasion the museum are due to run a Blackpool Tram Weekend throughout the Easter weekend.

Tyne and Wear Metro line closure: 17th to 23rd February 2024

Article updated 17/02/2024 with addition of photo of engineering vehicles at Airport.

There will be no Tyne and Wear Metro services running between South Gosforth and the Airport for seven days as work takes place to renew track and overhead line. The closure will be in place between Saturday 17th and Friday 23rd February to allow the work to take place with a replacement bus in use instead.

Another broken rail impacts services – this time in Sheffield

With Manchester Metrolink services still being affected by a broken rail at Victoria, another UK tramway reports a “rail break” which has meant that there has been a service change. This time its Stagecoach Supertram who have been impacted with the issue being at Manor Top.

In Pictures: More large numbers on the West Midlands Metro!

We’ve already seen it with Urbos100 55 on the West Midlands Metro but now its not so unique as sister tram 44 is now also running with large fleet numbers at one end. The tram has presumably had a bit of a coming together with something which has meant that it has required attention and a replacement end panel. And then with no normal sized fleet numbers available its received larger transfers – at least its easier to see which tram it is!
