Optimism a new train will run on the Metro this year

Its often been mentioned in press releases and the like that the first of the new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro is due to enter service by the end of 2024 (well, that’s been the case for a while since the introduction was delayed from last year) and now it appears that is edging closer to being the case, according to a report on Newcastle Chronicle website.

In Pictures: NET 202 gets a new advert

In Pictures: A look at Birmingham’s Eastside extension – Part 1

There are currently two major extension projects on UK tramways and they are both on the West Midlands Metro. Having recently paid a visit to see progress on the line out to Dudley (now to be known as the Black Country line) this time we go onto the Eastside line which will end up being a two phase extension as well due to the delays caused by HS2 construction. Ken Jones is our guide for these photos and in this first part we take a look at the route at the far end in Digbeth.

In Pictures: Trams run in the dark at Crich

There’s always something a little bit special about preserved trams running after dark (probably because it doesn’t happen that often) and that was the case over the weekend of Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th November at the Crich Tramway Village. This saw an extra special event take place – “A Journey Through Time and Light” – which for many included the highlight of trams running in the dark. Steven Hughes was there on Saturday 9th November and has shared a selection of images with us.

Next phase of West Midlands Metro expansion set to be given go-ahead

During the recent budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves called out the Brierley Hill West Midlands Metro as one of the schemes which would benefit from the confirmation of funding and whilst, at the time, there was no specific word from the region that this would definitely be happening that has now come with the decision to be green lit at a meeting later this month. However, its not quite the full originally proposed line that is funded with the final section to Brierley Hill still requiring a further business case.

UKTram Centre of Excellence hears about recent research

A recent meeting of the UKTram Centre of Excellence has heard about the latest research being conducted by the University of Huddersfield to Support Sustainable Mobility. Professor Adam Bevan attended the meeting and highlighted the work being done at the university on behalf of the industry, including a project looking at ways of standardising embedded rail.

Extra chance to ride the MER this year

Whilst Sunday 3rd November saw the official end of the 2024 operating season on the Manx Electric Railway (as well as other island heritage lines including the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway and the Snaefell Mountain Railway) that won’t be the last time you can enjoy a ride on the line as there will be a service between Derby Castle and Laxey for the Laxey Village Christmas Market on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November.

In Pictures: A third Uniqlo advert for Edinburgh Trams 273

Another car on the tracks at St Chad’s causes Metro delays

West Midlands Metro services into Birmingham City Centre suffered delays on Wednesday 6th November after a car got stuck on the tracks at St Chad’s. No trams were able to run between St Paul’s and Library for around four hours whilst the car was removed.
