In Pictures: Aberdeen Suburban Company relics

Earlier this year we saw a surviving tram from the Aberdeen Suburban Tramways Company return to the rails following an overhaul. It may no longer be operating as a tram as such but as a piece of hauled rolling stock but it remains a rare survivor from that tramway – which ran for the last time in 1927. During recent research into the history of tram no. 11 a further artefact has also been found.

Located in the Grampian Transport Museum archives a brass plaque stating “THE ABERDEEN SUBURBAN TRAMWAYS COMPANY”. It is believed that it was once affixed to a wall at one of the depots.

At least 100 years old – and probably significantly older than that as its hard to believe it would have been cast just before the tramway closed – this is the plaque discovered in the archives. (Photograph by William Brown)
