Although the main purpose of UKTram is obviously supporting tram and light rail networks in this country they are also regularly involved in discussions with overseas tram operators sharing knowledge and research. They have recently been supporting research into climate resilience on Gothenburg’s tram network with a group of students.
Andrea Svensson, Ida Welen and Margarita Zouridis are working on behalf of Gothenburg Municipality and approached UKTram as part of their project. They are exploring how tramway systems can adapt to the growing challenges presented by climate change, including extreme temperatures and flooding.
They met online with UKTram Lead Engineer Phill Terry to discuss experiences from UK networks and the practical challenges operators and infrastructure managers are addressing. He shared material developed through the Light Rail Engineering Group which included the findings of previous best practice sessions dedicated to fleet and infrastructure resilience during high and adverse temperatures.
The students work has involved reviewing current approaches and looking internationally at how tramway organisations are improving climate resilience, alongside emerging projects, technologies and innovations.
Phill commented: “It was a great experience to be able to speak to Andrea, Ida and Margarita and share some of the learning developed through the LREG, hopefully, some of it could be implemented in Gothenburg. Climate resilience is an increasingly important consideration for light rail and many of the challenges facing networks are being shared internationally.”
