Major engineering works will take place on the South Yorkshire Supertram network between Saturday 8th and Monday 31st August 2026 which will lead to changes to services on all four routes. The reason for the major disruption is that the work will be centred on the Park Square delta junction which allows trams to head onto the Yellow/Tram-train route towards Meadowhall and Rotherham Parkgate, Blue/Purple route to Halfway and Herdings Park and the city centre route and beyond to Malin Bridge and Middlewood.
The work will be part of a £3.5 million project to replace worn track, points and signalling equipment and pedestrian crossings. The junction sees 440 services use it every day and after 32 years it is in need of renewal. Once the work is complete it should be good for another 30 years of operation.
At the same time work will also see rail replacement at the Bernard Road crossing near Hyde Park tramstop.
During the works services will run as follows:
- Blue – Malin Bridge to Cathedral and Halfway to Sheffield Station. Every 15 minutes daytime, every 30 minutes evenings.
- Purple – Sheffield Station to Herdings Park. Every 60 minutes.
- Yellow – Middlewood to Cathedral and Meadowhall to Woodbourn Road. Every 15 minutes daytime, every 30 minutes evenings.
- Tram-Train – Woodbourn Road to Rotherham Parkgate. Approximately every 30 minutes all day.
Three replacement bus services will run:
- BP1 – Cathedral to Granville Road
- YE1 and TT1 – Cathedral to Woodbourn Road
All the details of the revised services can be seen on the South Yorkshire Supertram website t https://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-GB/supertram/Fitzalan-Works-8-31-August-2026
Ahead of these works taking place there will also be urgent preparatory works near Sheffield Station on Wednesday 5th andThursday 6th August. This will see no trams running from Fitzalan Square to either Halfway or Herdings Park on the Blue and Purple routes after 2100. A replacement bus will operate from Fitzalan Square to Halfway with passengers for Herdings Park given the advice to use the 47/48 bus service.
