If you can’t get a visit from the King in your 150th anniversary year when can you? King Charles III, who also holds the title Lord of Mann, visited the Isle of Man on 14th July 2026 and as part of his visit he helped the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway celebrate their important milestone.
Unveiling a plaque at Strathallan, the King met many members of the team who allow the horse tramway to continue operation before he got on board double decker 18 for a very short trip. Hauled by Bobby – in all his royal finery – His Majesty rode as far as Summerhill Stables.
As well as visiting the horse tramway, King Charles III addressed Tynwald and met other people from the Isle of Man who play a vital role in various sectors.
Ian Longworth, former Managing Director of Isle of Man Transport, Vice Chair of the UKTram Heritage Committee and resident of the Isle of Man, said: “It was fantastic to have the Lord of Mann visit and recognise the significance of this 150th anniversary year. The islands trams, trains and other heritage attractions depend on tourism for their survival and such occasions help to keep them in the forefront of destinations to visit.”
The Douglas Bay Horse Tramway’s celebrations will continue during the forthcoming Manx Heritage Transport Festival (28th July to 2nd August) as well as a special day dedicated to the 150th anniversary on Friday 7th August 2026.
2026 will also be a key year for the future of the tramway with Tynwald due to vote later this month on whether to release funding to re-extend the line to the Sea Terminal.
