Picture in Time: Blackpool Railcoach 678

Another photo comes from Blackpool in October 1979 and this time we’re at Bispham.

Ex-Towing Railcoach 678 and an unidentified car (possibly 638?) wait in the centre road at Bispham, where they have terminated. The driver of the more distant car, though not in the cab, looks to have already switched the headlights on, ready to use the crossover to move into the stop and load up for the return journey south (although the destination blind has yet to be changed).

Bispham was often a good place to see terminating specials, especially during the Illuminations with it being the northern end of the lights. It retains the centre track to this day although its use is now very infrequent with the modern Flexity2s often turning a bit further north at Little Bispham instead.

678 would be withdrawn in 2006 and did enter preservation but only survived until June 2023 when (with the tram in poor condition) it was scrapped at Wyre Dock having been stored there in the open for several years.
