West Yorkshire and Government united in their Mass Transit ambitions

Leeds – and the wider West Yorkshire region – have long had ambitions for a mass transit system, whether that be a full-blown tram system or a trolleybus network. It appeared last year that these ambitions would finally be realised but a setback came later when the relatively newly formed West Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority were told to delay (the dreaded re-phasing of the project) by the Government. However, a recent visit by Lord Hendy (Rail Minister) gave the chance for both sides to reaffirm their commitment, whilst more support has come – including from Leeds United FC.

Lord Hendy’s visit to West Yorkshire saw him met key stakeholders and they were all keen to tell him how important the Mass Transit system will be to economic growth in the region.

He said: “West Yorkshire’s Mass Transit plans have huge potential to transform the region by boosting connectivity and unlocking economic growth, jobs and homes. It was great to meet local politicians and business representatives to hear first-hand about the plans and to reiterate the Government’s support for the programme.”

The planned Mass Transit system would initially see two routes built, one would link Leeds and Bradford, with the other running around Leeds City Centre and out to the White Rose Centre.

One organisation which could benefit from the scheme would be Leeds United FC. Peter Lowry, Principal of Lowry Family Group and Director of the club, said: “I’m delighted that the Mayor and Secretary of State have reaffirmed their commitment to Mass Transit and we are here to support this important project. Mass Transit is vital to unlock the full potential of south Leeds and truly connect the city.

“It’s time for Mass Transit to roll into Elland Road and carry the city forward — because great clubs deserve great connections, and Leeds should move with the same pride and power as the roar inside this stadium.”

Tracy Brabin, West Yorkshire Mayor, added: “We in West Yorkshire are united in our ambition to finally bring a Mass Transit system to our region. We have the backing we need and remain absolutely resolute on our mission to deliver. Working in lockstep with the Government and our partners, we will see spades in the ground by 2028.

“As part of our Weaver Network, Mass Transit will create a better-connected West Yorkshire and unlock economic growth in our regional and national economy for generations to come.”

Following a public consultation in 2024, the Combined Authority are now focused on submitting the Strategic Outline Case later this year.
