We are going back over 20 years to 2002 for a trip to San Francisco as the next location in “Around the World in Trams”.
Taken on 20th July 2002 this photo shows one of the many PCC streetcars which operate in San Francisco although on this date 1053 had just been in the wars! You can see some minor damage to its front end from where it had been in a collision and to the left of the front end there are a couple of police officers who have undoubtedly been called to deal with the situation. A couple of other streetcars wait patiently behind on Market Street.
1053 was originally built as 2721 for Philadelphia and was acquired by Muni in 1992 with restoration to service coming the following year. As with many of the PCCs which operate in San Francisco, 1053 carries a “tribute” livery with this in the Brooklyn (New York City) colours.
